The national U18 women’s beach volleyball team has set the target of at least reaching the round of last eight at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games slated for October 6-18 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The duo of Valentine Munezero and Penelope Musabyimana entered residential camp on Saturday at Centre Christus in Remera, and have since been training twice a day at Amahoro Stadium under the watchful eye of Christophe Mudahinyuka. “The girls are fit and doing well in camp, they are eager to give their best. Our target in Argentina is to reach the quarter-finals at least, after that we will take one game at a time and deal with opponents as they come,” Mudahinyuka told Times Sport on Monday. Rwanda qualified for the Youth Olympics after finishing second at this year’s African Youth Games in July, staged in Algeria. They lost to Mozambique in the final to grab silver medals. Rwanda and African champions Mozambique are the only two teams that will represent the continent in ladies beach volleyball. The team departs for Argentina Tuesday night. Besides the women’s beach volleyball, Rwanda will also be represented in Athletics. Aimé Phraditte Bakunzi will compete in the men’s 3000 metres category. He will be under the guidance of Eric Karasira. The multi-discipline competitions are expected to be contested by around 4000 athletes from 206 countries, vying for medals in 241 events and 32 different sports. Rwanda is yet to win a medal at the quadrennial event since the 2010 debut in Singapore. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
