The woes of marrying a beautiful woman

In china, young men are advised to marry women with small slit eyes as they believe that they are easier to close before the devil enters them than the big ones. So women with small eyes stand a better chance of getting married than the ones with beautiful big eyes.Here in Africa if you are a man, you’ve probably been warned countless times about marrying a beautiful woman. This is not because those who advise you don’t want the best for you, infact it’s the other way round. “Son, beauty is worse than wine, it intoxicates both the holder and beholder,” my old man used to tell me every now and then.But of course like most young men, I would just roll my eyes and silently ask myself, ‘How deep is this man’s insecurity? Many movies, songs and poems have been written on this subject but like they say, forbidden waters taste sweet. Many people went ahead and tied the knot with the beauties. One of them happened to be Albert, a very close childhood friend. Albert was my sacrifice, it’s from him I came to understand why it’s unwise to marry a very beautiful woman. The moment he fell in love with Helen, he started acting queer.He would disappear without telling anyone and go to the beach to impress her. He borrowed money to buy her expensive gifts. By the time we met her, he was so obsessed with her that whoever so much as looked at her risked being thumped by him. Infact he closed ties with almost all his friends for suspecting them of eyeing her. By the time they tied the knot, he was almost alone with all his male friends. They kept their distance. He also suspected female friends for he thought they were ‘vibing’ his wife for their brothers and this continued even after the wedding. His was a very unhappy man; many times he would escape from work and go home to see if she was safe. Although she had a university degree, he never allowed her to work for fear of her mingling with other men.Helen was actually a very faithful woman! I felt bad for all of them; he lived in fear of losing her, and she was living in a prison with no friends. This is when I realised why my old man used to warn me. Mid this year, Albert and his wife of four years called it quits and filed for divorce. He was tired on chasing shadows and she was tired of living in a prison. For all the time they were together, they never knew her beauty caused them nothing but pain.
