Ssimbwa backs Police to fight for league title

Sam Ssimbwa has tipped his side Police FC to be in contention for the Turbo King Football league title after snatching a 2-1 win over defending champions Rayon Sports at the weekend. “The boys put on a wonderful performance against Rayon Sports. When you are able to beat Rayon Sports and draw against APR, you know that you are in the business,” the Ugandan tactician told Times Sport on Monday. He added, “I had planned for this game, they (Rayon) played slightly above what I had expected from them but credit goes to my players for following my instructions.” He revealed that when his team lost against Musanze, everyone doubted they would get anything from the two tough matches against the champions and former champions APR, but “we managed to get four points.” The former Uganda Express FC coach noted that had it not been for a slight lack of concentration in the last minute against APR, his team would have walked away with maximum points instead of one. “For us the season has just started, we made a poor start but slowly we’re improving, and that is a good sign if we want to be in contention to win the league title.” Police FC striker Kipson Atuheire rescued the Cops side from another hazardous situation as he inspired a vital 2-1 victory against the defending league champions Rayon on Saturday at Amahoro stadium. Goalkeeper Jean Luc Ndayishimiye’s error in the fifth minute gave an early goal to Police. Former APR striker Atuheire demonstrated great composure to score the second goal for Police in the 85th minute to give the law enforcers a 2-0 lead. Last season’s Most Valuable Player Cedric Amissi netted for the Blues through a penalty when Jean Bosco Uwacu was punished for handling the ball in the yard box in added time. Police stands in eighth position with eight points, but still behind their next opponents Etincelles FC, who are in the fifth position. Both teams meet on Wednesday at Stade de Kigali.
