The construction work of a mini-hydroelectric power plant at Mutobo, Musanze district has been completed. The plant that was constructed by Enco Private Limited a company owned by a group from Sri Lanka has a capacity to generate 200kw of power. Perera Kasun, the plant construction manager told The New Times that this capacity of electricity can serve about 300 households including providing power to nearby schools and a health centre. The project was funded by United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in conjunction with the Ministry of Infrastructure at a cost of $260,279 (about Frw142m). The construction started in May 2006. According to local leaders the new facility was constructed under the government programme of accelerating rural development. Ends
