The National Council of Nurses and Midwives (NCNM) has registered 25 cases of misconduct by its members since 2008.Two of the council’s members were permanently removed from the registrar, one was suspended for a full year, three were sanctioned and two reprimanded, according to Julie Kimonyo the registrar of NCNM.She made the revelation yesterday during a meeting to elect new representatives in Kigali. Kimonyo cited coming to work drunk, not respecting patients and violating the code of conduct, as some of the cases of professional misconduct.Seeking public confidence “The council regulates the profession through setting standards for education, practice and professional conduct of its members in collaboration with all stakeholders,” she said.Agnes Uwayezu, the chairperson of NCNM said stakeholders should employ nurses who are registered in order to give the public confidence in the quality of services they offer.The new representatives were elected according to their categories. Samuel Niyitegeka and Amiable Sibomana will represent associate nurses, Nasson Gafirimbi, Camille Kayihura, Aurelie Nkomeje, and Agnes Uwayezu were voted to represent the general nurses.Amiable Mutayomba will represent the mental health category, Immaculee Barindikje Muhawenimana and Consolee Maribori the midwives while nurses and midwife educators will be represented by Juliet Mukankusi and Christine Nyirahabimana.
