Editor,This is with reference to Gitura Mwaura’s column, “History could yet again prowl the Lake Kivu”, published in The New Times on September 19.I’m glad the author touched a little bit about our former kings. I find it sad how little we talk about our glorious past kingdoms – it’s perhaps for fear of unearthing buried divisions and prejudices. I understand that there are some negative things that people aren’t comfortable with our past, but that should not weigh down the positive and rich side of history.Look at ancient Portuguese and Arab maps, what you see in the hinterland of Africa is the Kingdom of Rwanda. It was a well known, strong and united kingdom and that’s the reason why none of our people were ever sold as slaves.Let’s learn to celebrate our past glories.Long live Rwanda.Peter Kaitakirwa, Kokstad, South Africa
