EASTERN PROVINCE BUGESERA—The World Food Programme’s regional director was in Bugesera this week working to make food more accessible to the most vulnerable members of society. Susana Rico has been brokering a deal with, if approved, would implement partnerships with various non-governmental organisations in the country to assure that food is rationed so that no member, especially those needing food and care the most, suffer. “We maintain our commitment to the government of the people of Rwanda. Our aim is help the government dream of eradicating hunger among its citizens come true” said Rico at Rutete resettlement camp. Rico was inspecting shelter-construction projects in Rutete, where Rwandese returnees from Tanzania are currently working on their own shelter under the food-for-work project. This year, 175,000 farmers in the country were expected to benefit from the food-for-work project says the World Food Programme. In Bugesera district, the organisation works in partnership with Millennium Villages and the Red Cross – Rwanda among others. Earlier, Rico visited Mayange B primary school and health center; both projects working with economist Jeffrey Sachs’ Millennium Villages. “We have a renewed commitment to the government of Rwanda in trying to attain her self-reliance and sustainability” she said, stressing the need for partnership with all stake holders towards attainment of a common goal. The World Food Programme, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, provides meals to 300,000 children in 300 schools, including those in Bugesera. Ends
