Editor,This is with reference to Paul Ntambara’s column, “May candidates with the best manifestos carry the day”, published in The New Times of September 16.I like the way the author approached such sensitive issues like elections. The salt and sugar part reminded me of the elections in my home village (where I was born), in Western Uganda. Election time is big business; MPs pay their way to parliament, no wonder many of them run bankrupt after elections. Those who don’t make it are ruined; some have died because of depression. The Rwandan approach is good but it has to be explained to the people for them to understand. When they look across the region where the citizens vote for individual candidates and not parties they are right to wonder why this is not the case here.I’m impressed by how campaigns are peaceful here. Kudos to the people of Rwanda.Busingye, Kigali, Rwanda
