Uganda joins bid to host Zone V World championship qualifiers

Uganda has submitted application to host this year’s Zone V FIVB World Championship Qualifiers scheduled for November, joining Rwanda which was until recently the sole candidate, it has emerged.Sadik Nasiwu, the Uganda Volleyball Federation boss, confirmed the development to the media last week.“We want to host the Zone V tournament and give a chance to fans to enjoy that level of volleyball in their own backyard,” he said.He said they had already submitted their bid to the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB). “We are in the process of informing the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) of our interest and we shall wait and see what their reply is on this matter.”It had previously been reported that Rwanda had almost won the hosting rights after it successfully hosted the sub-zonal tournament in June, this year.Gustave Nkurunziza, the Rwanda Volleyball Federation chairperson, previously told journalists that CAVB had given Rwanda the green light to go ahead with preparations for the zonal showpiece. Meanwhile, other reports indicate that Kenya is also interested in hosting the tournament which will determine the two teams from Zone V to compete in the last stage of the competition before the continental tournament next year.The zonal tournament will attract five regional countries, namely Burundi, Egypt, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.In the June sub-zonal event in Kigali, Rwanda finished second behind Egypt.
