WESTERN PROVINCE RUSIZI — Police in Kamembe, Rusizi district are holding two men for allegedly attempting to bribe traffic officers. The police said Jean-Paul Sebakungu and Vincent Ngendahayo were arrested on Sunday morning, after they attempted to bribe traffic police officials who were on duty with Frw15, 000, to allow them move smuggled goods. The cops had stopped a taxi in which the duo was traveling. On inspection the two were found with boxes of lighters at Ruzizi border. “We arrested them when they attempted to bribe us as Traffic police personnel with Frw15, 000 after finding them with boxes of illegal lighters they bought from DRC,” a police official said. The official added that they arrested them in order to erase the perception among some members of the public that some traffic police personnel are corrupt. At the police post, the duo admitted the crime and appealed for forgiveness. “Yes it’s true we wanted to bribe some traffic personnel who were on duty at Rusizi border road with Frw15, 000. But we ask for forgiveness because corruption is not allowed in our country,” said Sebakungu. The suspects will soon be charged with corruption and smuggling of goods. Ends
