Police in Northern Province’s Musanze District are holding Jean Chrisostome Muvunyi, the administrative director of Ruhengeri Hospital over alleged mismanagement of the hospital’s funds. The suspect was arrested mid this week following an audit which revealed financial irregularities. Chief Superintendent Francis Gahima, the Northern Province Regional Police spokesperson, has confirmed the arrest but said investigations are still underway and could not reveal more about the suspect’s case. “There are other people co-accused with him and we have launched investigations to arrest them. We can’t give details by now for the sake of successful investigations,” he said. The minister of health, Dr Agnes Binagwaho, said that the man was arrested over mismanagement of hospital funds but referred this newspaper to Musanze District officials for details. His arrest follows an internal audit done by health officials and local leaders in July this year, which sources say has uncovered financial management gaps at the hospital and triggered the administrator’s arrest. But district officials were not clear on their explanations related to the hospital’s case saying it was too early to give any information. “I have an appointment with the director of the hospital over this case this evening (Thursday). Right now I am not ready to comment on the case. Maybe after our meeting,” said Emmanuel Rutaremara, the executive secretary of Musanze District.
