Kirehe multi-million taxi, bus park nears completion

Construction of Rwf460 million bus and taxi terminal in Kirehe District is nearing completion.The new parking lot, which will accommodate 80 vehicles, is expected to bring to an end parking woes in Nyakarambi town.Previously, there were unnecessary conflicts and chaos due to lack of parking space, said Emmanuel Gakunzi, the district engineer.Gakunzi told The New Times last week that the town was expected to handle huge traffic after the completion of Rusumo One Stop Border Post, in the near future.“We have one of the busiest borders in the country...we, thus, needed a standard park. More facilities were included in the construction of the park, including marked parking bays, toilet facilities, shelter and market stalls for small businesses,” he said.According to Kirehe District mayor, Protais Murayire, the new park would ably serve the increasing passengers travelling to and Kigali.Commitment He noted that thousands of commuters, including those from Tanzania and Burundi would use the park everyday.“The new park will create additional space to meet the rising demand for business. It also demonstrates our commitment to providing the best travel experience.”The mayor added: “There is no doubt that this will encourage more people to travel through our district.”The park capacity will mean more space for passengers, easing congestion and helping improve overall journey satisfaction, he said.Drivers who ply the Kigali-Rusumo route are also pleased with the new park.Samson Kanamugire, a driver, said that the new park would help them operate in a more organised way.“Kirehe had no taxi park...drivers operated in a messy manner with limited space. We sometimes parked on verandas, it’s been chaotic,” he said.Most districts in Eastern Province allocated huge potions of this fiscal year’s budget to infrastructure development.
