Rwandan team qualifies for U16 continental Airtel tourney

A Rubavu-based team is set to participate in the Airtel-Africa Under-16 football tournament in Nigeria, aimed at scouting for young and talented players on the continent.Lionceaux Academy qualified to represent Rwanda after beating Rwamagana 3-0 in the final game played at Stade de Kigali in Nyamirambo over the weekend.The team now stands a chance to front players, who could train at the Arsenal football camp if they win the continental tournament which is due in September this year.The youngsters, who will be selected from the competition, will get the best indoor sports training at the Gunners’ residential football clinic.Pan African mobile network operator, Airtel, sponsors the tournament in collaboration with Arsenal Football club.Airtel’s Country Manager, Marcellin Paluku said that this tournament was a grassroots football initiative that offers young boys in Rwanda the opportunity to play football and showcase their talent.“A professional level of football is developed with focus on the youth by offering a wealth of opportunities for upcoming players and fans,” he said.Lionceaux Academy’s 15-year old Fraterine Iradukunda was selected as player of the tournament.
