Twenty-eight teachers in the rural part of Gatsibo District on Wednesday completed a two-week training in basic ICT skills. The training was organised by the district in conjunction with Digital Opportunity Trust (Dot).According to Cyprian Bavugabwose, one of the trainers, the skills imparted will increase trainees’ ability to become continuous learners, with access to requisite facilities.“The 28 we trained acquired requisite skills to navigate three basic programmes; Microsoft Word, MS Excel and MS Powerpoint. Emmanuel Uwitonze, one of the teachers, said the education systems around the world were under increasing pressure to use the new information and communication technologies.“We tend to be left out as teachers from remote areas, yet ICT is vital, for instance, to facilitate distance learning which is vital in our work,” said Uwitonze.Evode Ndikubwimana, another beneficiary, said the skills would greatly enhance both academic and business research by teachers and students.“ICT-supported education can promote the acquisition of the knowledge and skills that will empower students,” he said.
