MTN, USAID hand over books to 90 schools

In a bid to improve and strengthen education in Rwanda MTN Rwanda partnering with USAID/Rwanda under the theme “Investing in Education for All”, delivered world-class print and audio instructional materials to 90 schools in Gasabo, Karongi, Rulindo, Bugesera and Huye districts.These materials which are developed by Literacy, Language and Learning (L3) and the Rwanda Education Board will facilitate primary one and two in the English, Kinyarwanda and math lessons.In her statement to the press, Carrie Antal the Education Office Director of USAID/Rwanda said stories are an integral part of L3’s literacy program.“Stories show children that reading is enjoyable and they encourage them to develop a life-long love of reading,” said Antal.According to MTN’s CEO Khaledi Mikkawi, the delivery of audio instruction materials and cards is in line with MTN’s new vision of introducing learners to a bold, new digital world.“90 schools are exploiting these materials, which will ultimately benefit all public schools across the country,” said Mikkawi.More so, MTN in its corporate social responsibility has renovated some of the class rooms and built a nursery school for G.S Rwanyanza which cost the company approximately RWF 4 million on construction materials and desk. According to the headmaster of the school Cyriaque Bizumuremye, before MTN came to support them, the nursery children were sitting on pavements due to the lack of enough desks and the class rooms were in a terrible state.“We like the way MTN is interacting with the local communities, and we are lucky to be part of the beneficiaries. It is not only giving back to the community but also brightening the future of these children,” explained Bizumuremyi.
