In a world where gender inequality remains a persistent challenge, one organization in Rwanda is leading the charge to rewrite the rules. The Rwanda Men's Resource Centre (RWAMREC), a civil society organisation, has taken on the daunting task of reshaping masculinity and promoting gender equality. Since its founding in 2006, RWAMREC has spearheaded a movement to engage men in positive and progressive behaviors, challenging harmful social norms that perpetuate violence and discrimination against women. Their work has created a ripple effect, transforming communities across the country. Changing society from the ground up RWAMREC understands that to dismantle the oppressive systems of patriarchy, it is essential to confront the underlying causes of gender inequality. By redefining masculinity and promoting positive attributes like empathy, emotional intelligence, and equal partnership, RWAMREC has unlocked the potential for lasting change. Their visionary approach, known as Men Engage, has become a crucial tool for those seeking to build a more just and inclusive society. One shining example of RWAMREC's transformative power is its Bandebereho programme. This groundbreaking initiative focuses on expectant couples and those with young children, recognising the crucial role that fathers play in shaping family dynamics. Through a series of participatory training sessions, men are encouraged to explore the importance of reproductive health, caregiving, and fostering healthier family relationships. The impact of these sessions goes far beyond individual households; it reaches the very core of communities, igniting a shift in attitudes and behaviors that reverberate through society. Consider the story of Jean and Marie, a couple who participated in the Bandebereho programme. Before joining, Jean believed that household chores and caregiving were solely Marie's responsibility. However, through the programme's transformative sessions, Jean began to challenge his deeply ingrained beliefs. He started sharing household chores, taking an active role in parenting, and treating Marie as an equal partner. Their relationship blossomed, and they became a source of inspiration for their neighbours and friends, who witnessed firsthand the positive changes brought about by embracing positive masculinity. Lasting change To gauge the effectiveness of the Bandebereho programme, a randomised controlled trial was conducted, assessing participating couples over an extended period. The results were staggering. At 21 months, improvements in attitudes, behaviors, and relationships were evident. Women reported significantly lower levels of physical and sexual violence, and rates of economic and psychological violence also declined. The positive changes observed at 21 months were not short-lived; they persisted well beyond the evaluation period, illustrating the lasting impact of RWAMREC's programs. The impact of RWAMREC's work extends far beyond individual households. Men who embrace positive masculinity become catalysts for change, inspiring others in their communities to challenge harmful social norms and stereotypes. For instance, Eric, a participant in the Bandebereho programme, decided to share his newfound knowledge with his peers after going through the sessions. He organised community gatherings where he facilitated discussions on gender equality, encouraging other men to reflect on their own behaviors and beliefs. These conversations sparked a wave of transformation, leading to a collective effort to create a more equitable and inclusive community. Despite the remarkable successes, RWAMREC faces ongoing challenges. Funding limitations threaten the continuation of their programmes, and deeply entrenched social gender norms still hinder progress. However, the overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants affirms that the advantages of embracing positive masculinity far outweigh any hurdles faced. As Emmanuel, a training facilitator of Bandebereho, affirms, Today, I'm committed to informing her about everything and making decisions after discussing with her. I am now committed to teaching those good things to other couples. Emmanuel's dedication showcases the domino effect that RWAMREC's work is creating, spreading a culture of equality, respect, and shared decision-making. National transformation RWAMREC's advocacy efforts have also yielded tangible policy changes at a national level. Policymakers and stakeholders in Rwanda have embraced the importance of men's engagement in promoting gender equality. Transformative masculinity approaches have been integrated into gender-responsive policies, creating a fertile ground for continued progress. The impact of RWAMREC's work has garnered recognition on a global scale, with the Bandebereho programme being hailed as an effective model for reducing intimate partner violence by esteemed organizations such as the World Health Organization and UN Women. As we witness the transformative power of RWAMREC's initiatives, it becomes clear that a gender revolution is underway in Rwanda. The organisation's unwavering commitment to reshaping masculinity and promoting positive behaviors is inspiring individuals and communities to reimagine what is possible. Through their interventions, RWAMREC is not only empowering men and women to break free from the chains of inequality but is also fostering a sense of hope and possibility for a brighter future. The stories of Jean, Marie, Emmanuel, Eric, and countless others serve as testaments to the immense potential within each individual to embrace empathy, equality, and respect. They showcase the transformative power of engaging men in challenging harmful social norms and actively participating in creating a more inclusive society. As we look to the future, let us draw inspiration from the remarkable journey of RWAMREC and its participants and dare to believe that a world of true gender equality is not only within reach but well within our grasp. Together, we can create a future where men are not mere spectators but active agents in shaping a more just and inclusive society. The time for transformation is now.
