Nyirahabimana 19:14:23 TWELVE athletes stand to be selected on the national team which will represent Rwanda at the World Athletics Championships set to be held in Moscow in August. The country’s top athletes were in action during the national athletics championship held at Amahoro National Stadium on Saturday. At the meet, different athletes battled for qualification for the World Youth Championships due to be held in Ukraine and World Championships in Moscow in July and August respectively. Cyriaque Ndayikengurukiye won the men’s 10000m, while Claudette Mukasakindi took the women’s title at the same distance. The other top athletes in action included, Frederic Habakurama, Felicien Muhitira, Epiphanie Nyirabarame and Vivine Niragire. In the 5000m men’s category, Potien Ntawuyirushintege, Godfrey Rutayisire and Cyriaque Ndayikengurukiye took the top three slots with Nyirabarame, Violette Ishimwe and Genes Nyirahabimana winning in the women’s category. The Rwanda Athletics Federation secretary general Johnson Rukundo told Times Sport yesterday that the final team which will head to Moscow will be known mid this week after deliberations by the technical team. “We have not yet selected the final team which will compete in the World championship. After the trial, the technical team will sit and decide who should be picked before taking them into early training,” he said. Though the federation is likely to pick the best three in each race, whoever is picked will join Robert Kajuga [10,000] and Jean Pierre Mvuyekure [full marathon]. The pair had already secured qualification for the World Athletics Championships after getting the minimum requirements at last year’s London Olympic Games. In 2011, Rwanda missed the World Athletics championships which were held in South Korea due to visa problems.
