ISK children do it for charity

Children of International School of Kigali (ISK) last Friday staged a play at their school and all proceeds were handed over to Umubyeyi Community Foundation. The children amused their parents with hilarious short plays that left many in stitches. The school supports the foundation that was set up to look after disadvantaged children in Nyamata-Bugesera. On why the school opted to partner with Umubyeyi foundation, Miss Rachel and Miss Caitlin both teachers at ISK had this to say. “We first decided to partner with the Umubyeyi Community Foundation in September, 2013. We had met Mensiye (the founder) and appreciated his story and how he is trying to give back to the community. We feel that Mensiye is an excellent role model for our students and what he and his colleagues have begun to build at UCF is truly inspiring for all of us. UCF and ISK-R are both young organisations and through this partnership, we can be part of each other’s growth. We are already looking forward to our next project with Mensiye and UCF!”“It has been fun to interact with the kids at Umubyeyi because even though they are different from us we shared a mutual respect for one another. There were smiles all around when we arrived and frowns all around when we left. We look forward to seeing their happy faces again next year,” said one of the Grade 4 children. Another added, “When we first went to Umubyeyi, we made games that were too hard. The second visit was more successful because we knew what they liked and what they understood and they all participated in the activities. When we played with them, we shared smiles and our hearts filled up with joy. We gave them things they never had and in return they showed us friendship and happiness. Things like the reading rally, the clothing drive and the play were done to contribute to the growing organisation and with that we ended our amazing journey with Umubyeyi.”After the play, the representative from the Sudanese embassy announced a contribution of US $500 to go to the activities of Umubyeyi Community Foundation. In his remarks, Mukarage Moses Mensiye the founder of Umubyeyi thanked the little kids, their teachers and their parents for supporting their fellow children in Bugesera and hoped that the partnership would continue. The children often visit their counterparts in Bugesera and spend time playing and reading.
