WESTERN PROVINCE KARONGI — The Rusizi District police commander has said residents are to get Community Policing skills in order to help in detecting crimes. Francis Muheto, who is also the Acting regional police commander for Western Province, said Community Policing is vital in ensuring security and crime prevention. He was closing a three-day seminar on crime prevention at Hotel Golf. The seminar attracted participants from all the seven area districts; who are supposed to train other residents about Community Policing policy. “Community Policing will also be taught at grassroots from village (Umudugudu) to sector level,” he said. He observed that the policy has helped reduce crimes ever since it was established. Participants comprised of leaders at different levels, heads of schools and religious leaders. During the training, the participants were urged to step up their campaign in order to reduce crime rates. The trainees were briefed on; community policing principles, how to tackle the problems of domestic violence, empowerment of vulnerable groups in decision making, and uprooting the genocide ideology among other things. “We expect more similar training [in the area] because there are different people who need to be trained,” said Muheto.
