Nine local clubs confirmed for Memorial tourney

Rwanda Volleyball Federation has finally confirmed the nine clubs to compete in this year’s Genocide Memorial Tournament scheduled for June 1-2 at Amahoro stadium. The Federation’s Executive Secretary, Gertrude Kubwimana confirmed the development yesterday. She said that Rwanda will be represented by nine teams; four clubs in men’s category and and five clubs in the women’s category. National University of Rwanda, INATEK, Lycee de Nyanza and APR will compete in the men’s category while APR, Rwanda Revenue Authority, Ruhango, St Joseph Kabgayi and St Alloys Rwamagana will battle for honours in the women category. Meanwhile, thirty clubs are expected to honour the event with the major representation coming from foreign countries. Uganda has sent three clubs namely; Kampala Amateur Volleyball club, Sky and Nemo Star. Top premier division Club in France, Sporting Club de l’Ouest has confirmed to participate in the event, Tunisia U23 men and women and Kenya Commercial Bank will take part in the event. The matches will be played at Kimisagara and Amahoro stadium. The tournament, which is sponsored by the Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG), is held in remembrance of 46 (known) members of the volleyball fraternity who include players, coaches, and administrators, who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis. Other countries expected to send their teams; include Burundi, Congo Brazzaville and Tanzania. APR is defending champion in the men’s category while Rwanda Revenue is defending champions of the previous event in the women’s category.
