Idebate Rwanda to host Ugandan debaters

Idebate Rwanda, a group of volunteers who have been organising and training students to debate will this weekend host 15 teams from Uganda for a debate competition on Pan Africanism and the role of the African Union. The debate is meant to coincide with the occasion of the jubilee of the African Union (formerly Organisation of African Unity). “We are planning to have a competition involving 40 teams,” said Christine Teta, the group’s president. Idebate is currently welcoming volunteers who can serve as judges for the debate competition that will be held at King David Academy this Saturday, May 11, from 8am to 5pm. To prepare for the debate on Saturday, a mock debate will be held today at 5pm at Ishyo Arts Centre/Geothe Institut. Prominent debaters will present on the topic “Has the African Union been a success.” Later on May 25, 2013, members of Idebate Rwanda will travel to Uganda for a reciprocal debate engagement. Idebate has been holding several debates among students in secondary schools and universities. According to their rankings, Lycee de Kigali and Fawe Girls’ School are topping the ranks in the advanced category while Lycee Notre Dame de Citeaux and Gashora Girls’s School are leading the pack in the beginners’ category.
