Senegal, Chad sign agreement

Dakar. The prosecutor of the special court set up in Senegal to try former Chadian dictator Hissène Habré is expected in Ndjamena this week to obtain materials that would facilitate the ongoing preliminary investigations started three months ago, officials have said.The move follows the signing of a legal agreement in Dakar on Friday by the justice ministers of the two countries that would facilitate working visits by the prosecutor and Chadian legal officials.Present at the ceremony were Senegalese authorities, African Union and European Union representatives, rights campaigners and some members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Senegal.Senegal’s Justice minister Aminata Touré described the agreement as “historical” while her Chadian counterpart Jean-Bernard Padaré said his country had “nothing to hide”.“We will make available every document and resource persons to help the prosecutor to conduct his duty in the freest way possible,” Padaré said on the Senegalese national broadcaster in an interview on Saturday.
