South Sudan police aids survivors in Bugesera

The South Sudan Police Services (SSPS) have donated $14,000 (Rwf9m) to a group of Genocide survivors Amizero cooperative society in Bugesera district.The donation that is to help the survivors finance their income-generating projects and education was delivered by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Stanley Nsabimana, yesterday, in Ntarama sector. Amizero is composed of 85 youngsters, who survived the killings in Bugesera during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, when majority of them were below five years of age, and lost all their parents and relatives. The SSPS support was given to IGP Emmanuel Gasana, last week, by his South Sudan counterpart Pieng Deng during the former’s visit to Juba.Bugesera mayor Louis Rwagaju thanked SSPF for reaching out to the survivors. He said the donation will cater for education of the survivors, including training in technical skills. Amizero cooperative society now boasts a banana plantation and rental tents which help them generate income.Through such initiatives, the group managed to buy 18 heads of cattle and 38 goats. Eighteen of the survivors have also completed university. RNP, Bugesera partner The handover of the donation was followed by the signing of a partnership agreement between Rwanda National Police and Bugesera district to cooperate in crime prevention and human security. The signing was presided over by IGP Gasana and Mayor Rwagaju.The partnership will see Rwanda National Police train community policing committees in the district, lay concrete crime prevention strategies jointly, environmental protection, poverty eradication and healthcare activities.Bugesera becomes the sixth district with a unique partnership with RNP. Others are Kicukiro, Gatsibo, Burera, Nyanza and Nyamasheke. Gasana said the agreement is just a formality as the two parties have been supporting each other in the past in various areas. The RNP previously donated 15 bicycles to community policing committees and gave out boats to facilitate patrols on lakes. “Security creates a conducive environment for investment and development in general, and together we will make this a reality in Bugesera,” Gasana said, pledging 200 uniforms for CPCs and promising support to the district development programmes.
