Prices for sugar and bananas drop

Prices for sugar and bananas have dropped when compared to last week. A mini survey by The Business Times shows that while a kilogram of sugar had increased to Rwf800 in Kimironko market and Rwf1000 in Kimihurura market, it has since subdued to Rwf750 and Rwf800 respectively.Banana prices which had increased to Rwf200 a kilo the previous week, have since fallen to Rwf180 in Nyarugenge market attributed to increase in supplies. “Suppliers are back from the short holiday supplying as usual, the question of scarcity can no longer be an excuse for prices of commodities to remain high,” Innocent Bahizi chairman Kimironko market said. Elsewhere, prices for most commodities continue to remain stable with a kilogram of Tanzanian rice costing Rwf1000 while Pakistani rice costs Rwf750.A kilogram of Irish costs Rwf230 in Nyabugogo market while meat has retained its price at Rwf2300 and Rwf2500 per kilo.A kilogram of groundnuts retained its price from last week at Rwf1200 while fresh beans go for Rwf450.Millet costs Rwf1500 a kilo, with maize flour going for Rwf600 per kilo across major markets. Prices for most fruits have not changed last week’s pricing. A kilo of passion fruits cost between Rwf1000 and Rwf1200 in Nyarugenge and Nyamirambo markets respectively.
