Rayon clear Shungu’s first installment

SIX-TIME PRIMUS league champions Rayon Sport have paid Rwf8m of the US$30,000 (approximately Rwf19.9m) they owe former coach Raoul Shungu in arrears.Rayon Secretary General Olivier Gakwaya said that though Fifa set April 4 as the deadline for the club to clear out the debt, the club ca only afford to pay in three instalments.“We have raised Rwf8 and already deposited it to his (Shungu) account and informed Fifa of the development. We hope to raise the other instalment by mid April,” said Gakwaya.In his third reign at the club in 2008, Shungu was sacked under unclear circumstances, prompting him to drag the club to Fifa, the world football governing body, which has since instructed the Blues to pay him or risk losing points and possibly relegation to the second division.He added: “We have already talked to Shungu and he is very cooperative. He wants the issue to be sorted without dragging in Fifa again. A half of the debt is cleared, and then we will pay the remaining balance in two installments.”Shungu now coaches FC Saint Eloi Lupopo in the DRC. The Congolese tactician is considered by many as Rayon’s most successful coach after guiding the club to the Cecafa Club championship in 1998 and three league titles in 1997, 1998 and 2002.
