Amavubi Stars must win away to Mauritania in Nouakchott on September 6 before hosting the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia on October 12 in Kigali. As part of ensuring a successfully campaign of winding up the second round of the qualification phase, the local football body, Ferwafa has confirmed that Amavubi Stars will camp in Nouakchott for a week in preparation for their crucial game against Mauritania where a victory for Rwanda will definitely take it into the third and final qualifying phase of the 2010 World/Africa Cup qualifiers. The Ferwafa vice president Veduste Kayiranga said yesterday that that nothing will stop Amavubi Stars from reaching the third round. “Rwanda has a promising team and to enhance our chances of heading to Angola for the 2010 Nations Cup finals, we are heading to Mauritania to pitch camp ahead of the crucial tie,” “We be with better preparations, we can acquire maximum points from the Mauritania fixture before hosting Ethiopia at home the following month,” Kayiranga said. Amavubi Stars must finish top in this group to guarantee passage to the third and final round or at worst get good results away to Mauritania and Ethiopia to stand a chance of qualifying as one of the eight best runners-up. Amavubi Stars lie second in group eight level on nine points with Morocco but with a slim eight goals scored behind Atlas Lions who have scored ten goals. Twenty countries will qualify for the third round of the competition with the group winners in the 12 groups qualifying automatically. Eight best runners-up will join the 12 group winners for the third round, which will have a total of 20 teams.
