Food prices remain stable

Prices for most foodstuffs have remained stable compared last week.A kilogramme of meat is at Rwf2,300 in Nyarugenge Market, while in other markets around the city, it will cost you Rwf2,500.Irish costs Rwf230 in all markets across the city and millet is unchanged at Rwf1,500 per kilogramme. A tray of eggs costs Rwf2,000, while a kilogramme of maize is at Rwf600 and Rwf450 for beans. Prices of other items, including sugar (Rwf800) and rice (Rwf750), have also remained stable.A kilogramme of bananas costs Rwf170 in Nyarugenge Market and Rwf180 in Kimihurura and Kimironko markets.Alice Umurerwa, a vendor in Nyarugenge Market, is pleased that prices are stable. “When prices shoot up, we get few customers and make low profits… this is good for business,” Umererwa said. According to Oscar Sibomana, the principal statistician at National Institute of Statistics Rwanda, the consumer price index has been increasing at an average of 0.24 per cent since November, from 118.5 points in January to 118.8 points in February, indicating an annual change of 5.1 per cent compared to 4.8 per cent the previous year.
