Rugunga Rugby Club were overwhelming winners at the Kigali sevens women tournament that was held at Green hills. The Rugunga-based outfit outclassed their opponents in commanding fashion in the round robin event that was played on Sunday. After beating their second string side (53-0), Rugunga who fielded a good number of national team players also defeated Remera Rukoma (19-0) and APAPEK (34-0). After the event, the local rugby federation secretary general Janvier Ugeziwe indicated to Times Sport that the federation is full of confidence ahead of the national women rugby team’s forthcoming international engagements. “The standard of play has improved and we are confident that the team will perform well in Uganda,” Ugeziwe said. The ‘Blackbacks’ are lined up for two international events; the Kyadondo 7s (Uganda) as well as the inaugural Africa Women’s Cup 7s tournament that runs from August 7-9 in East London, South Africa. Meanwhile, Remera Rukoma and Kabgayi will weigh themselves with Kigali’s heavy weights, Green hills and Ndera in the inter-schools rugby championship. Rukoma and Kabgayi topped the Southern Province tournament after dislodging Ruhango and ETO Gitarama. Rukoma walloped Ruhango 25-2 while Kabgayi crushed Gitarama 56-9. Ends
