INGREDIENTS4 cups all-purpose flour4 teaspoons baking powder2 teaspoons salt2 to 2-1/2 cups water1/4 cup shortening1 pound lardPREPARATIONSift dry ingredients into a mixing bowl. Cut in 1/4 cup shortening. Add enough water to make dough hold together. Knead dough until it is well mixed and smooth. Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness and cut into squares or triangles. Heat lard to 400F. In an electric frying pan, or to just below the smoking point in a heavy skillet. Place squares of dough in hot oil, turning to brown on both sides. Drain bread on absorbent paper. Serve hot with beans, stews, or honey.
