Entrepreneurs acquire management skills

Selected start-up business operators from Kigali have been trained in enterprise management. The training aims at sharpening the entrepreneurs’ skills to run businesses profitably and innovatively.“Many new business owners often don’t know what it takes to run a business since they could have started them without proper planning and market research,” Johanne Moeller, the Educat communications officer said. Educat is a not-for-profit organisation that is conducting training that targets start-up businesses in Kigali.“The trainees are from all kinds of sectors like coffee processing, film production and photography and computer software technician, among others,” Moeller said.The training is part of the initiative by the Educat and partners, Banque Populaire du Rwanda, Grow Movement and the German Development Organisation (GIZ), to support business start-ups to operate enterprises professionally so they can grow and expand.Diogene Dusengumuremyi, a participant, who operates an IT and software firm, told The New Times that he hoped to acquire skills that will enable him understand how to position his company to overcome the daily challenges he faces and have an edge over competitors.“Currently, I employ 15 workers and this training is teaching me a lot on how to manage everything and also apply modern business skills to earn more from the venture,” he said on Friday.Moeller said the training will cover five modules over a three-month period, from February 22 to May 3, 2013. The training sessions are done over the weekends. By the end of the programme, the trainees would have learnt how to identify a game plan for their business, know their vision, mission, goals, challenges, opportunities and resources, plus acquiring skills in strategic budgeting and financial procedures. Other skills are self-leadership, leadership of employees and organisational leadership, making marketing strategies and gaining insight into different media platforms, PR, communication and integrated marketing.Moeller said in-between the modules, Grow Movement, a UK-based consultancy and mentorship organisation, will provide individual mentorship from international experts and professionals, focusing on the needs of each business and entrepreneur.
