Carnegie Mellon University Rwanda (CMU-R) has received a grant from a United States based ICT company to boost research in eHealth.Ricoh Innovations Inc (RII), a leading provider of digital office solutions, based in the Silicon Valley, US has availed CMUR with unrestricted grant to support the research of CMU-R’s Assistant Professor and a scholar in the area of ICT for healthcare, according to a statement released by the Kigali based-American IT varsity.According to the statement, CMU-R has identified ICT for healthcare as a principal research thrust due to its profound impact in developing countries.CMU-R, last year, in August ,formally launched its graduate degree programmes. The initial class of 2012 started with 26 students enrolled for Master of Science in Information Technology. “We are delighted to receive this grant from RII,” said Bruce Krogh, the director of CMU-R. He added, “It makes it possible for our faculty and students to launch new research into ICT innovations that will significantly improve healthcare in developing countries like Rwanda, particularly through the use of mobile technology.”Last year, RII established a subsidiary in Bangalore, India to combine market-oriented technology development with research to pioneer new business tailored for emerging countries throughout the world.The university plans to open permanent premises in Rwanda in 2015 at the Kigali Special Economic Zone in Nyandungu Sector, Kicukiro District.
