The United Nations has awarded 24 Rwandan police officers with medals for their exemplary and professionalism in executing their peacekeeping duties in South Sudan.The awarding of medals and certificates took place on Tuesday in South Sudan and presided over by Hilde Johnson, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Special Representative of the Secretary General for South Sudan.Hilde lauded the Rwandan contingent and leadership for the exemplary service and performance.“It is important to appreciate work done by Rwandan Police Contingent as well as their Military colleagues (Infantry and Aviation Contingents) for working as one team in the larger international community in South Sudan, to aspire to a democratic and stable environment,” Hilde stated.“I am pleased to acknowledge the role of President Paul Kagame for his commitment and tangible support to the UN in general, and in UNMISS in particular,” she added.The UNMISS Commissioner, Dr Fred Yiga, thanked the officers for their discipline and outstanding work, and offered gratitude to the United Nations Police (UNPOL) and UNMISS in general.“This is not only a medal reflecting the length of service, but the quality of service,” Yiga said, adding that he was aware of the Rwandan history, and that he was “deeply proud with the achievements of the Rwandan contingent” and the country in general.
