Butare Hospital gets Rwf1.8bn upgrade

THREE WARDS, including a maternity/neonatology unit, an emergency wing and an administration block, worth about Rwf1.8 billion were on Tuesday commissioned at the Butare University Teaching Hospital (CHUB).The facilities, with equipment costing over Rwf600 million, are expected to boost the quality of services at the hospital, officials said.Dr Jules Ndoli Minega, the Medical Director at the Huye-based hospital, told The New Times they have been struggling to cope with the growing numbers of patients.He stated that the facilities will enable them to serve and admit many patients at once.“With time, the number of patients seeking healthcare and treatment here keeps increasing and we have been facing challenges related to the lack of enough infrastructure,” Dr Ndoli said.“We hope these new wings will help us to offer quality services.”The 500-bed University Teaching health facility is a referral hospital and serves over 13 district hospitals.According to officials, the high turnout has been hampering efforts to provide the desired quality healthcare at the hospital.The maternity wing, for instance, had only 70 beds and was operating in an old block, Dr Ndoli told The New Times, noting that the newly-constructed wings will open soon.
