EASTERN PROVINCE NYAGATARE — Nyagatare district authorities have warned the district hospital management over their negligence toward patients. The district advisory council blamed the hospital management for not attending to patients who need immediate attention. The council members argued that most patients had their lives due to lack of doctors or nurses. During a meeting to discuss the district activities at PDRCIU main hall the council members accused the Director of Nyagatare hospital, Dr. Jean-Baptiste Saha for poor management of the entire hospital. They said that all problems in the hospital are caused by lack of proper supervision. They added that Dr. Saha sometimes takes three months without supervising. “One time, I was moving with the District Police Commander in the hospital and we found a child in the hospital who was almost dying, no one had attended to him for over one week. I am telling you the kid’s body was rotting. When we inquired from Dr. Saha, he was not aware”, the Mayor of Nyagatare Robert Kashemeza explained to the council. The hospital management was also accused of negligence at the hospital maternity ward where many women have lost their lives because of lack of doctors. The council revealed that the hospital has enough doctors and nurses but they didn’t care about the patients who come to them. Alicadi Kamanzi, the President of Nyagatare District Advisory Council (DAC) said that they are going to first give the warning letter to the Director of hospital and if he fails to change, they will work with the district authorities and request for his transfer. The council also indicated two names of medical personnel who failed to attend to patients. Dr. Kahazi Murume is accused of refusing to attend to a patient claiming to be sick. During the same meeting DAC also discussed different activities in the district including the modernisation of the district memorial site and who would benefit from the loan scheme for economic development, ‘ubudehe’.
