EASTERN PROVINCE KIREHE — The Kirehe District Council Committee (DCC) over the weekend officially announced that Patrick Nkunzumwami was no longer the district mayor. Nkunzumwami was arrested last week on allegations of peddling his influence to illegally reach a 24-year old Marie Rose Musaniwabo of APAPEM Secondary School Kirehe. Nkunzumwami also allegedly slept with her that night. Last week he wrote to the district council asking to retire to retire. Nkunzumwami was arrested in Rwamagana on Thursday. He is being detained in Kirehe where he waits to appear in court to answer charges against him. “He wrote to us that he was vacating the post to go and solve his personal and family problems,” Gakwenzire Tadéo the president of the DCC said. Following his resignation, Muhikira Benson the vice mayor in-charge of finance and economic affairs was appointed the acting mayor until he is either confirmed or a new mayor is appointed. According to the districts’ jurisdiction, Muhikira will be in office for not more than 90. According to Marcel Higiro the Police spokesperson, the former Mayor allegedly committed the offence on 3rd June 2008. Ends
