Indian trade chamber does well to orient Rwandan students

Editor,This letter is with reference to your article, titled “Do Rwandan students abroad get enough orientation?” published by The New Times on Wednesday, January 9, 2012.As the High Commissioner of Rwanda to India, Williams Nkurunziza, very rightly commented, the Rwandan Embassy in India reaches out to every school or institution with Rwandan students to familiarise them with the Indian culture.Being a premier chamber of commerce and industry, the Indian Merchants’ Chamber (IMC) holds regular international students forums and workshops so as to orient and integrate Rwandan students as well as students from various other countries into the mainstream of the Indian society.During our recent major tourism event, World Tourism Day, for example, we invited students from Rwanda , Botswana , Poland and Turkey to perform before an elite audience consisting of members of the consular corps , trade commissioners, government officials, travel agents and tour operators.Recently, we have also started a “mentorship” programme where both Indian and international students can draw on the expertise of our members and gain the much needed experience and confidence of interacting with the business community.We welcome Rwandan students and do believe that such incidents, as the recent arrest of three Rwandan students for allegedly teasing an Indian woman due to lack of awareness, will never happen againClarence Fernandes
