Official calls for recognition of Legal Aid Forum

The Assistant Attorney General in charge of Legal Aid and Human Rights, Jacqueline Bakamurera, has requested the newly formed Legal Aid Forum (LAF) to speed up the registration of the forum so that it can be officially recognized. She was speaking during a consultative meeting between LAF and the ministry of Justice held last week at Alpha Palace Hotel. According to Bakamurera, LAF’s input in the justice system would be of great importance if the forum was officially registered. “Your contribution to the society is very important and very soon you are going to have many people running to you for assistance. You have to ensure that the forum is registered so that we can recognise it and also develop a strong partnership,” she said. The partnership would seek to strengthen joint efforts geared towards promoting legal aid services and instruments like advocacy and legal education. She pledged to push for the forum’s fast registration, but urged the body’s leadership to fulfil all the requirements immediately. LAF comprises 34 local and international organisations which provide legal aid services. The forum is based in Rwanda and the majority of its members are law practitioners registered with the Kigali Bar Association. Ends
