The Amavubi Stars’ team climaxed the 2008 Ghana Cup of nations’ qualifiers with a deserved 4-0 victory over Liberia yesterday at Amahoro stadium. Amavubi Stars who displayed sleek football got the goals through Labama Bokota, Saidi Abedi Makasi, Jannot Witakenge and Olivier Karekezi on 21st, 29th, 85th and 90th minutes respectively. The Amavubi Stars’ players were in impressive form in the first half as Makasi set up Bokota to open his account. Playing in front of Karekezi, Bokota found Haruna Niyonzima who connected well with Saidi Abedi for the Israel based striker to score the second. Bokota Labama who was making his international debut proved to his fans that he had more to offer for both his club and nation. The Rayon Sports striker needed just ten games in the national league to claim a place on the national team starting line up. His 14 goals made him the league’s top scorer hence the trust from national team head coach to hand him the role of leading Amavubi Stars attack. Half time ended in a 2-0 victory for Amavubi Stars’ team but in second half, the Lone Stars showed some little resistance but was halted by Witakenge goal, ten minutes to end the end of the game. Karekezi headed home a last minute goal off a Abdul Sibomana’s cross from the right wing to end the visiting side’s chances of come back. However, the Lone Stars composed of five professional players never had any good chance of coming close to Amavubi Stars’ goal which was secured by Ramadhan Nkuzingoma. Amavubi Stars’ team Coach, Michael Nees said after the game that his players displayed good football and deserved the victory. “We dominated the game despite failure to utilize several goal scoring opportunities but the general performance was good,” Nees said. Nees said that the victory was attributed to his players because they took the game very seriously and attained the final positive result.
