Trio prepares for Kampala Marathon

THREE Olympic runners Robert Kajuga, Claudette Mukasakindi and Jean Pierre Mvuyekure are locked in intensive training ahead of the MTN Kampala Marathon scheduled for November 25.Kajuga, 10,000m runner at London Olympic Games told Times Sport that they have been training for last couple of weeks and hope to be in good shape for the race.Kajuga 26, who will compete in half marathon, said yesterday, “I am in good shape and eager to go for one of the top three spots. I have been training with my colleagues for the past few weeks in Kigali.”Besides Kajuga, Mukasakindi and Mvuyekure will compete in women and men’s full marathon.Uganda dominated the podium places of most races in the last event. Kenya, a global powerhouse in marathon, however still made its presence felt with a 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 42 kilometres.Abraham Kiplimo and Viola Chemos had earlier in the day led Uganda to top five finishes in both the men and women’s 10km races respectively. Dorcus Inzikuru then won the women’s 21km.Kenya’s Onesmus Serem topped the men’s race followed by Rwanda’s Robert Kajuga while Uganda’s Jackson Kiprop was in third position. Uganda’s Jane Suuto won the women’s event.Organisers of the MTN marathon plan to make this year’s race an occasion worthy of an event marking Uganda’s Independence golden jubilee.Besides attracting East Africa’s long distance elite, the organisers are doing everything in their means to ensure the event also has a record entry.A total of Rwf27 million in cash prizes will be on offer for the nine competition categories. The two winners in the 42 kilometres event will walk away with Rwf3.7m each.
