LAST week’s heavy down power left various families homeless after the rains washed away weak structures. In Kigali, one of the most affected areas was Gastata suburb, and during a visit yesterday, places that were once homes are now deserted with remains of destroyed property laying around. The affected places are quiet as those who were affected have left to other safe settlement areas. Residents who spoke to The Sunday Times said that soil erosion in the area is beyond their control. They urged the Government to intervene. Running water from the slops that sometimes result into floods in Nyabugogo is the major problem residents in the area face. Floods due to the running water from the slops have been for sometime paralyzing economic activities in Nyabugogo. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs says that in only two months, 26 people have died and 205 hectares of crops have been destroyed across the country.
