Kayonza–The 85-year old Gahini Hospital in Kayonza District has acquired a modern waste incinerator. The eco-friendly equipment was donated by the Ministry of Health with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).During the hand over on Thursday, Alphonsina Mukamunana from the Ministry of Health, said the bio-medical waste management plant that is capable of destroying about 15 kg of waste every 15 minutes would facilitate waste disposal at the health institution in an environment-friendly manner. “It cost $120,000, but is worth the value...we look forward to having even more incinerators in the country,” Mukamunana said.USAID official, Jennifer Slotnick, noted that the facility was important as the hospital attracts many people.“It will, above all, reduce human risk of infection...you know children may play with needles and other dangerous tools. In general, it reduces people’s exposure to hazardous instruments,” she said.“This is one of the most modern incinerators with the ability to burn even expired drugs and to diffuse pollution,” she added.
