A study to have more areas connected to the central sewerage plant that will be located in Giti Cyinyoni, Nyarugenge District is on, according to City Mayor Fidele Ndayisaba The mayor told The New Times yesterday that previous studies have been revised to increase on the number of areas that will be linked to the system.“We are now conducting an extension study that will enable the first phase of the system benefit many areas,” Ndayisaba said. Among other areas to be connected to the system, according to the mayor, are Kiyovu, Kacyiru, Kimihurura, Gikondo and Rwezamenyo.Kigali City has been in negotiation with the European Development Bank to fund the central sewerage system.This system will bring together smaller systems that have been put up in several real estates like that Gaculiro and Kagugu, both in Gasabo district, among others.The lack of a central sewage system in Kigali has been forcing real estate developers to provide sewerage systems for their housing units, but Ndayisaba said that on completion of the central system, small systems will be linked to it.Managing of waste products is still a challenge in the city, but in bid to prevent it, city authorities recently passed a bylaw that instructs developers to build houses with flushing toilets.This was after realising that pit latrines are not only hard to maintain, but also expensive to manage in the long run.The bylaw also requires schools, hospitals and other public buildings to have their own sewage systems.Meanwhile, the construction of the state-of-the-art complex that will cost Rwf 60 billion has started in the city center. Preliminary works will take at least 12 months.The construction will see modern commercial complexes and hotels put up in a square that lies between the main downtown roundabout, Centenary House, Kigali City Tower and Kwarubangura building in the city center.
