Public institutions, civil society train in gender statistics

Statisticians and gender experts from government institutions and civil society organisations are undergoing a two-week training in Gender Statistics Framework.The training, supported by the Gender Monitoring Office (GMO) and the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) is underway in Rubavu district.The major objective is to disseminate vital information with up to-date data gathered from recently published surveys and to facilitate concerned institutions to possess the baseline in the elaboration of the ongoing EDPRS-II.“You will be required to consider gender statistics as indicators from various institutions in relation to the updated data from different surveys and administrative records,” Bedouin Ruterana the director of demographic and social statistics at NISR told the participants.Speaking at the same function, Diana Ofwona, the UN Women Regional Representative Central Africa, said that the workshop was part of a series of capacity development initiatives in the area gender statistics which her office is dedicated to continuously support.Ofwona called on statisticians to ensure that the data entered is verifiable and that the collection at the original source was undertaken using sound research methodologies.She encouraged participants to share their insights, expertise, good practices and experiences regarding the gender statistics.Oda Gasinzigwa, the Chief Gender Monitor hailed NISR for the impressive initiative of elaborating this framework as a tool for compiling and disseminating sex disaggregated data.“This is a vital tool during our monitoring progress,” she said.
