Fueling Rwanda’s development and supporting Agaciro Development Fund

By Paul Ntambara As individuals, government institutions and the private sector continue to rally behind the Agaciro Development Fund by voluntarily making monetary contributions, on Monday October 15th, Hashi Energy, a leading Petroleum Marketing company presented a cheque of Rwf10million as a contribution to the Fund. Over Rwf20billion, and counting, has so far been realized in cash and pledges to the Agaciro Development Fund, initiated by Rwandans to improve the level of financial autonomy of the country. Through this fund, Rwandans look towards supporting long-term economic development by accelerating Rwanda’s progress towards Vision 2020 and beyond. Presenting the cheque to the Private Sector Chief Executive Officer, Hashi Energy General Manager Elisha Amimo, noted that the company was proud to be associated with the fund as it joins the rest of the Rwandans in contributing to the development of the country. “When we heard of the launch of the Agaciro Fund, we felt that we should not be left behind. As Hashi Energy, we felt that we should contribute and be part of this history and development process,” Amimo said. He said that contributing to the fund creates a sense of belonging and ownership of the country’s development programs, a break away from the past where citizens solely looked to government to fund the country’s development agenda. Hashi Energy, a petroleum importation and distribution company was registered in Rwanda in 2004, opening up its retail outlets in 2008. The company also handles wholesale distribution of petroleum products in Rwanda. It partners with the Energy and Water utility company—EWSA, to supply fuel for electricity generation. Apollo Nkunda, the company secretary, noted that Hashi Energy is proud to join the rest of Rwandans in contributing to a fund that could get the country to a level where it can sustain itself. “Our message to the rest of the companies is that the country belongs to Rwandans, the country belongs to all of us and we need to take collective responsibilities and contribute towards the development of the Rwandan economy. It is time that we cease to depend on foreign aid and get to a level where we can sustain ourselves,” Nkunda noted. “We urge other companies that have not contributed to Agaciro Fund project to come up and be part of the success story that we are beginning to build for Rwanda.” Hanington Namara, the Private Sector Federation Chief Executive Officer expressed his delight over the way members of the private sector have enthusiastically contributed to the Fund.He said that a team has been instituted to determine how the Fund will operate. “As a private sector, it was decided that members on a voluntary basis put in whatever they can afford so that whenever the fund’s modus operandi is determined, their will be something to begin with,” he noted.
