NUR rewards best performers

SOUTHERN PROVINCE HUYE – The National University of Rwanda (NUR) has rewarded its best performing students with cash prizes as motivation for academic excellence. The prizes were organized under the third edition of ‘Rector’s Excellence Awards.’ Handing over the awards to students from different academic disciplines at the University, NUR Rector Prof. Silas Lwakabamba observed that such awards should be a motivation to the rest of students to always strive to be better and excel in whatever they do. The best performers walked a way with cash prizes amounting to Frw50, 000 each. Those who excelled included; Celestin Hategekimana, a second year student (Faculty of Medicine), Norbert Tuyishime, fifth year student(Faculty of Agriculture) Casien Habyarimana (Faculty of Science) who scored an average of 17 points and Jean Pierre Samba (School of Journalism). Students who wrote the best final year dissertations were also recognised during the ceremony. These included Dr. Norbert Muramila, who wrote a dissertation on the treatment of tuberculosis and Immaculate Nyamihinga from the Faculty of Science. The University also recognised students whose innovations painted the university in positive light. Jean-Paul Uwiziwe from the Faculty of Medicine was recognised for initiating an exchange programme of lecturers with universities of Copenhagen, Denmark. Under the partnership, universities of Copenhagen have signed memoranda of understanding with NUR that make it possible for their dons to lecture at the NUR. Former student, Placid Magambo currently working with the Rwanda Office of Information (ORINFOR) was recognised for making a documentary about the university. The documentary has received international acclaim. The ceremony was climaxed with the crowning of Sandra Uwibabazi, Miss Campus 2008. Ends
