Infertility largely refers to the biological inability of a person to contribute to conception. Infertility may also refer to the state of a woman who is unable to fully go through a pregnancy. According to medics, men do not want to accept they can be infertile. Most of them refuse to go for checkups when their wives fail to get pregnant. They believe only women can be infertile.Dr. Eugene Ngoga, an obstetrician and gynecologist at King Faisal Hospital agrees that men hardly go for checkups or treatment for infertility. He, however, notes that couples have claimed to be infertile before the period deemed for one to be infertile approaches.For one to be considered infertile - especially for women - one should be sexually active for a period of one year or more.“Sometimes women come for checkups and we find that the problem is actually not with them. Men can also be infertile but usually the blame is on women. It’s advisable that both parties seek medical advice,” Dr. Ngoga advises.There are many biological causes of infertility, some that can be stopped with medical assistance like ovulation problems, tubal blockage, age-related factors, previous tubal ligation and endometriosis. The main cause of male infertility is low semen quality. Another possible cause is a low sperm count.Women who are fertile experience a natural period of fertility before and during ovulation, and they are naturally infertile during the rest of the menstrual cycle.Dr. Ngonga said they are expecting a laboratory facility dubbed “InVitro Fertilization” this year .This will enable infertile couples to produce babies
