Indian community observes Independence Day

Hundreds of Indian residents in Rwanda yesterday gathered at UTEXRWA in Kigali for a flag raising ceremony to celebrate the 66th anniversary of India’s Independence Day.The event was organised by the Indian Association of Rwanda (INAR), a platform that provides a common identity to the Indian community in Rwanda through the promotion of unity, friendship and goodwill based on mutual understanding and cooperation.At the occasion, Joseph Sebastian, the chairman of the association, hoisted the Indian national flag and later addressed the gathering before the Indian President’s speech addressed to the nation on the eve of the Independence Day was read out.Both Rwandan and Indian anthems were sung at the colourful ceremony.“While celebrating our day it would be appropriate to renew our continued contribution to Rwanda’s development as Indians. Indians are engaged in most of the sectors everywhere in the world and Rwanda is no exception,” said Sebastian.He hailed President Paul Kagame and the entire leadership for the conducive and friendly environment given to Indians, adding that the community was happy to be part of the country’s development.Over 1,500 Indians living in Rwanda are involved in all kinds of business that include among others, industries, education, construction, infrastructure, ICT and telecommunication.“We are observing regular visits of various Indian business groups visiting Rwanda and others have already established their businesses in the country and we are proud of excellent relations prevailing between Rwanda and India,” he noted.The INAR Chairman urged the Indian community to preserve the sanctity of the country and work with the Rwandan community for more development in the country.At the event Sebastian thanked the Indians who participated in a sports gala. The winners were awarded with trophies and other prizes.At the ceremony, children performed various Indian cultural songs and dances.Relations between Rwanda and India continue to grow strong and this was witnessed by the visit of the Indian State Minister for External Affairs, Preneet Kaur early this year.Kaur was in the country to sign pacts with the government on renewable energy and solar electrification in 35 rural-based schools.India’s telecom giant, Airtel, launched its entry into the Rwandan market this year and intends to invest $130 million in the near future.
