Schools urged to promote extra-curricular activities

Three hundred pupils from Kacyiru Primary School yesterday completed a two-week camp session organised by Imbuto Foundation.The objective of the camp was to equip these children with life skills and also have them interact freely with mentors and other elders, according to Radegonde Ndejuru, the Director General of the Imbuto Foundation.She said many children don’t have a chance to learn life skills, and that through such camps, they are given a chance to learn outside the classroom.“Children shouldn’t only be confined to their classroom studies, but should have time off to play and be given exposure to learn other values they don’t learn at school or even home. This camp was therefore a chance for the children to explore new ideas and develop a number of critical skills while interacting with others,” she said.Radegonde noted that Imbuto would love to continue organising such camps but would only do so if they get more funds.She called upon the children to make use of what they had learnt during their time at the camp, and urged them to be obedient, smart, focused on developing their talents, honour their culture and love their country.Pacifique Dushime, 14, a primary six pupil, said he had learnt a lot from the camp such as how to take control in bad situations, being polite, working as a team and patient.“I wish we could have more of such camps because most of what we learnt isn’t taught in our school. It’s my first time to attend a camp, I wish more leaders could organise for us such gatherings where we can meet, play, learn and freely share our views with elders,” Dushiime said.The holiday enrichment camp provided an atmosphere for children to experiment with creative arts, hands-on educational activities and group skits among others.
