Editor,Last Thursday, former United States President Bill Clinton announced a seven-year programme aimed at training the next generation of medical practitioners in Rwanda. A day earlier, he had inaugurated a state of the art Cancer Centre at Butaro Hospital in Burera District –the first of its kind in a rural area across eastern and central Africa.The ripples of significance once unleashed will flow until the goal is achieved at a time like this. We are so grateful to President Bill Clinton for bringing hope to Rwanda and her neighbours. Many people have been praying for an answer to the burden of cancer.Now the challenge for all of us is to take advantage of this momentum – to learn and share information; knowledge is power.Get involved and support those involved in the fight against cancer. That is how US has made strides against cancer, we have lessons to learn from and strategies that have worked elsewhere.We only need to modify them to suit our needs. Let’ us own this problem and the solutions.Thumbs up for President Clinton, the Government of Rwanda, and other partners for these life-saving initiatives.Philippa Kibugu Decuir
