Africa can’t entirely shun ‘western’ democracy, but can strike a balance

Editor,Reference is made to the article that appeared in The New Times of July, 16, titled “Why Africa’s democracy and democratisation should be home-grown and not imposed”. The author, Oscar Kimanuka, made an important point and I would recommend all Africans to read his piece.We have learnt that there is really no uniform model of democracy. To function effectively, a democratic system should reflect the unique needs and culture of the country in question. When we talk of democratic ideas being fundamental human values which are true but without a respected constitution, this may not be the case especially in modern dayIn my opinion, true African democracy can only be a hybrid rather than a purely western or pure African democracy. Because the modern day civil society institutions run in Africa originate and have many traits of the western democracy, Africa can’t live up to a divorce of the western democracy or else these institutions die.
